WITH THE PLATTER IN front of them, Spring wished she would have goaded him into something else. Something that would not require her to undo the top button on her jeans and show how she could really put away food.
Unfortunately, sheâd been the one to suggest the mozzarella sticks eating challenge and here they were, with fifteen minutes to finish twenty pounds.
Maybe Marshall was right. Maybe it was disgusting, and had potential for turning into something gross as well.
What had she been thinking?
This was not the kind of thing to do on a first date when you wanted to impress someone. Even if it wasnât technically a date. Now theyâd either both end up with stomachachesâpretty much a givenâor heâd think her repulsive and definitely not date-worthy.
Marshallâs eyes had gone wide and he stared at the loaded platter of deep-fried cheese. Already green around the gills? But that could be the overhead lighting. She hoped.
âWhy did I let you talk me into this?â he moaned, completely ignoring the cheering crowd around them.
Spring wondered the same thing but wisely kept a smile plastered on her face. âAre you ready?â
âNo. I will never be ready.â
The buzzer dinged and the wait staff yelled to signal the start of their time. With a final grin at her âdateâsâ face, Spring dug in with a zest she usually reserved for men or food.
This time, she had both in front of her.
They didnât end up winning t-shirts, she lamented later as they strolled down the boardwalk, but theyâd had fun. Wasnât for lack of trying. Theyâd simply run out of time. But it took their minds off of the break-in at the Seafoam Street house for a while.
âI never want to look at another cheese stick again in my life.â Marshall patted his stomach. âLook at me. Iâm waddling like a duck. How can they seriously expect two people to handle that much cheese? Itâs blasphemous!â
Spring chuckled, although she found it difficult to walk herself. Her balance was skewed by the solid weight in her stomach. âCome on, admit it. You had fun.â She placed a hand over her mouth to keep the burp inside where it belonged.
âOh, I wonât tell you that I didnât,â Marshall stated. âIâve never partaken in an eating challenge before. But I donât think Iâll need to eat for the next week. It might also adversely affect my desire for all dairy products in the future.â
âHeaven forbid! We wouldnât want you to miss out on the dairy treats of the world. What have I done?â She flung her hands up to her cheeks in an exaggerated horrified gesture.
âHow could you, woman? I will never want to eat ice cream again because of this.â
She glanced over her shoulder to where the ice cream shop sat locked for the night. Ready for another full day of business in the morning. âYeah, too bad for you they are already closed. Otherwise, Iâd get a cone and eat it in front of you just to make you miserable.
